An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Gujarat’s Kutch district early on December 26, triggering panic among residents. According to the Seismology Department, the epicenter was located at a depth of around 10 kilometers. The sudden tremors jolted people awake, forcing many to rush out of their homes in fear.

The quake was felt across several parts of Kutch during the early morning hours, briefly creating an atmosphere of anxiety amid the winter chill. However, no reports of casualties or major damage have been reported so far. Kutch is known to be a seismically active zone and has experienced frequent minor tremors in the past.

It is noteworthy that just a few days earlier, on December 20, mild earthquake tremors were also felt in Bharuch district at around 4:56 am. The epicenter of that quake was reported near Jambusar, approximately 45 kilometers from Bharuch, causing momentary panic among residents.

What to Do During an Earthquake?

During tremors, people are advised to move to open areas away from buildings, trees, and electric poles. Avoid using elevators and use staircases instead. If evacuation is not possible, take shelter under sturdy furniture like tables or beds and stay away from heavy objects and glass.

Seismology Director Sumer Chopda has urged citizens not to panic, stating that earthquakes of up to magnitude 5 are common in the Kutch region and such aftershocks are part of natural seismic activity.
