In a significant move amid Gujarat’s long-standing prohibition policy, the state government has announced further relaxation in liquor regulations specifically for GIFT City (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City). The decision aims to strengthen GIFT City’s position as a global financial and business hub, catering to international investors and professionals.
What has changed?
As per a notification issued by the Home Department on December 20, individuals will no longer be required to obtain a temporary liquor permit to consume alcohol in GIFT City.
Non-residents of Gujarat, visitors from other Indian states and foreign nationals can now consume liquor at designated venues by simply presenting a valid photo ID. Earlier, such visitors were required to undergo a time-consuming permit process.
Relaxation introduced in 2023, now expanded
Liquor consumption in GIFT City was first permitted under a regulated permit system in 2023. The latest amendments further simplify the rules, offering greater convenience to business travellers, foreign investors and executives of multinational companies.
Expanded service areas
Under the revised rules, liquor can now be served not only in select restaurants but also within hotel premises, lawns, open areas, poolside zones, terraces and food & beverage areas. This move aligns GIFT City’s facilities with those of international business districts.
Relief for employees working in GIFT City
The government has also simplified the permit process for employees working in GIFT City. Instead of applying through HR heads or recommendation authorities, employees can now apply directly through an authorised officer, reducing procedural delays.
Additional benefits for permit holders
Permit holders can now host up to 25 guests at a time, accompany them to designated venues and allow dining-only visitors access to wine-and-dine areas. These provisions aim to create a more open and globally competitive environment.
Government’s objective
Experts believe that the relaxation under the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 1949 is a strategic step to attract international investments, enhance ease of doing business and position GIFT City alongside leading global financial centres. The government expects this move to accelerate investments and drive economic growth in the state.
