The United States administration under former President Donald Trump has announced a significant policy shift aimed at undocumented immigrants residing in the country. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has enhanced incentives under its “Self-Deportation” initiative to encourage voluntary departures and reduce enforcement-related costs.
According to the revised policy, undocumented immigrants who register through the CBP One app by December 31 will be eligible to receive a $3,000 cash incentive, along with a government-sponsored flight back to their home country. Previously, the incentive amount stood at $1,000.
DHS officials stated that the program is being offered for a limited period and is designed to simplify the departure process while minimizing legal complications. Participants will also receive relief from certain civil penalties related to visa overstays.
The department highlighted that forcibly deporting an individual costs the US government over $17,000 on average, whereas voluntary departures could cut expenses by nearly 70 percent. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the initiative as a cost-effective solution that benefits American taxpayers.
However, authorities have also issued a stern warning: undocumented immigrants who do not opt for voluntary departure may face arrest, forced deportation, and permanent bans from re-entering the United States.
DHS data indicates that nearly 1.9 million undocumented immigrants have already left the US voluntarily since January 2025. Officials further revealed that the administration is preparing for a more aggressive immigration enforcement campaign in 2026, including expanded detention capacity and increased staffing.
