Resident alleges year-long sewage problem has made daily life difficult; municipality assures permanent solution before Diwali
Amod:
Serious allegations of administrative negligence have surfaced against the Amod Municipality over the failure to resolve a long-standing underground drainage problem. A local resident, Syed Ejaz Bapu, claims that sewage has been overflowing and spreading into the premises of his house for more than a year, creating foul smells and making it difficult for his family to move in and out of the house.
According to the resident, repeated verbal and written complaints have been submitted to municipal officials and elected representatives, including Municipality President Mahendrasinh Desai, Vice-President Sajubhai Rana and Umesh Pandya. However, he alleges that no permanent solution has been provided so far.
The resident also stated that he recently submitted another formal application in the municipality register, but the situation remains unchanged.
‘Only Temporary Cleaning Is Being Done’
Syed Ejaz Bapu alleged that whenever a complaint is made, municipal workers arrive with basic equipment, carry out superficial cleaning of the drainage line and leave.
He further alleged that the waste removed from the drainage is sometimes left near his house instead of being properly disposed of, resulting in the garbage and foul smell returning to the doorstep.
The resident expressed concern over the possibility of illness spreading due to the persistent sewage and unhygienic conditions.
He also said that his wife is currently undergoing hospital treatment for a serious illness and expressed concern about the impact of the unhygienic surroundings on his family and children.
The resident warned that if the issue is not resolved immediately, he may take further steps, including closing the drainage chamber outside his house, and said he would approach the District Collector’s office to pursue the matter.
Municipality Says Permanent Solution Is in Process
Responding to the allegations, Amod Municipality President Mahendrasinh Desai said that the present administration has been in charge for around three months and has received two complaints from the resident during this period.
According to Desai, the area is connected to an old underground drainage system, and because the resident’s house is located towards the end of the line, blockage and overflow occur repeatedly.
He said that permanently shutting down the existing drainage line is not possible as it could create problems for other residents.
New Drainage Line Approved
The municipality president said that a permanent solution has already been initiated.
According to him, a proposal to construct a new drainage line at an estimated cost of ₹1.50 lakh was approved during the general body meeting held on February 12, 2026.
The estimate has reportedly been prepared, while the remaining process includes technical approval followed by tendering.
The municipality president and chief officer have assured that the new drainage line will be completed before Diwali, providing a permanent solution to the problem.
Until then, the municipality says that whenever complaints are received, workers are being sent to the site for immediate cleaning and maintenance.
The key question now is whether the municipality’s assurance will translate into timely action and whether the affected resident will get relief from the persistent sewage problem before the situation worsens.
